A crate that's too small is cruel and a crate that's too big undermines house-training. This dog crate size calculator turns two measurements into the right standard crate size.
Add 2–4 inches to your dog's length and height. Your dog must be able to stand up fully, turn around, and lie down stretched out — that's the standard for a correctly sized crate.
What Size Crate Does My Dog Need?
Measure nose to the base of the tail (not the tail tip — that adds unused space), then floor to the top of the head while sitting. Add about 4 inches to each and round up to the next standard crate size. A dog 24 inches long needs a 30-inch crate.
Standard Crate Sizes
Crates come in fixed sizes measured by length: 18–19 in (XS), 24 in (S), 30 in (M), 36 in (L), 42 in (XL), and 48 in (XXL). Because the sizes jump in 6-inch steps, a dog near a boundary should go up rather than down.
Why Bigger Isn't Better
Dogs won't soil where they sleep, which is what makes crate training work. Give a puppy too much room and it will use one end as a toilet and sleep at the other, breaking the whole system. For a growing puppy, buy the crate for the adult size and use a divider panel to shrink the usable space as it grows.
