Dog Pregnancy Calculator Guide
Knowing your dog's due date lets you prepare the whelping box, schedule the vet's pregnancy confirmation and X-ray, and be ready the moment labor starts. This calculator takes your dog's first breeding date and gives you an estimated due date plus the normal 58-to-68-day window, along with a week-by-week timeline of what to expect.
Due date = first breeding date + 63 days. Normal canine gestation ranges from 58 to 68 days (about 9 weeks). Because sperm can survive several days and ovulation timing varies, the range matters as much as the single date.
How Long Are Dogs Pregnant?
Dogs are pregnant for an average of 63 days measured from ovulation. Measured from the breeding date, the range widens to roughly 58–68 days because a female can conceive from a mating that happened a few days before or after she ovulated. This is why vets date pregnancies from ovulation (via progesterone testing) when precision is needed.
Week-by-Week Whelping Timeline
| Days from Breeding | Stage | What Happens |
|---|---|---|
| Day 0 | Breeding | Mating occurs; fertilization follows within days |
| Day 22–30 | Confirmation | Ultrasound can confirm pregnancy and heartbeat |
| Day 30–35 | Early signs | Nipples enlarge; appetite and behavior may change |
| Day 45+ | X-ray | Puppy skeletons show on X-ray — count the litter |
| Day 50 | Prep | Set up the whelping box so she settles in early |
| Day 58 | Watch | Start twice-daily temperature checks; earliest safe delivery |
| Day 61–65 | Labor | Due-date window; temp drops below ~99°F ~12–24h before labor |
Signs Your Dog Is Close to Labor
- Temperature drop: A rectal temperature falling below about 99°F (from the normal 100–102.5°F) usually signals labor within 12–24 hours. This is the single most reliable at-home sign.
- Nesting: She scratches, digs, and seeks out her whelping box.
- Restlessness and panting: Pacing, shivering, and refusing food often appear in the last 24 hours.
- Clear discharge: A drop in appetite plus a clear vaginal discharge can precede the first puppy.
Worked Example
If your dog was first bred on March 1, her estimated due date is May 3 (March 1 + 63 days). Delivery any time between April 28 (Day 58) and May 8 (Day 68) is considered normal. Begin temperature monitoring around April 28 and have your vet's number ready.
When to Call Your Vet
- More than 24 hours have passed since her temperature dropped and no puppies have arrived.
- Strong contractions for 30–60 minutes with no puppy delivered.
- More than 2 hours between puppies when you know more are coming.
- Green or black discharge before the first puppy, or signs of pain or distress.
This calculator gives an estimate based on standard canine gestation. It is not a substitute for veterinary care — always confirm pregnancy and monitor your dog with your veterinarian.
