Dog Chocolate Toxicity Calculator Guide
Chocolate is poisonous to dogs because of theobromine, a stimulant dogs clear from their system far more slowly than people do. This calculator estimates the dose your dog received so you can tell your vet how urgent it is — it does not replace calling them.

Treatment is far more effective in the first couple of hours, before symptoms appear. Never try to make your dog vomit unless a vet tells you to.
Dose = theobromine in the chocolate ÷ your dog's body weight in kg. Risk depends on all three of: how much was eaten, what type it was, and how big the dog is.
How Much Chocolate Is Toxic to Dogs?
There's no single number, because type matters enormously. Signs of poisoning generally start around 20 mg of theobromine per kg of body weight, cardiac effects around 40, and seizures around 60. A 50-pound dog eating 4 oz of milk chocolate lands near 10 mg/kg — but the same dog eating 4 oz of baking chocolate gets about 69 mg/kg, which is life-threatening.
Darker Chocolate Is Far More Dangerous
Theobromine content per ounce is roughly: white chocolate 0.25 mg, milk chocolate 58 mg, dark/semisweet 150 mg, baking chocolate 390 mg, and cocoa powder 737 mg. That means one ounce of baking chocolate carries as much theobromine as nearly seven ounces of milk chocolate. A single ounce of baking chocolate can be critical for a small dog.
White Chocolate Is a Special Case
White chocolate contains almost no theobromine, so this calculator will show a very low dose. That does not mean it's harmless — the high fat and sugar can trigger vomiting, diarrhoea, or pancreatitis, which is serious in its own right. Call your vet regardless of what the number says.
Watch for Xylitol Too
Sugar-free chocolate and many sweets contain xylitol, which is dramatically more dangerous to dogs than theobromine and can cause a fatal blood-sugar crash within an hour. This calculator does not measure xylitol. If the wrapper lists xylitol or "sugar-free", treat it as an emergency immediately, whatever the chocolate dose works out to.
Symptoms and Timing
Signs usually appear within 6 to 12 hours and can include restlessness, excessive thirst, vomiting, diarrhoea, a racing heart, tremors, and seizures. Theobromine has a long half-life in dogs, so effects can last for days. Crucially, treatment works best before symptoms start — waiting to "see if they're okay" is what turns a manageable case into an emergency.
