Time Card Calculator Guide
Work out hours worked from your clock-in and clock-out times, minus any unpaid break. The result is shown as decimal hours (for payroll) and as hours and minutes, and it handles overnight shifts.
Hours = (clock out − clock in) − unpaid break. If clock out is earlier than clock in, the shift is treated as running past midnight.
How Do I Calculate Hours Worked?
Find the difference between your start and end times, then subtract the unpaid break. From 9:00 to 17:30 is 8 hours 30 minutes; a 30-minute break leaves 8.0 hours.
Decimal Hours for Payroll
| Minutes | Decimal |
|---|---|
| 15 min | 0.25 |
| 30 min | 0.50 |
| 45 min | 0.75 |

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I calculate hours worked?
Subtract the clock-in time from the clock-out time, then subtract any unpaid break.
How do I convert minutes to decimal hours?
Divide the minutes by 60 — for example, 30 minutes is 0.5 hours.
How does this handle overnight shifts?
If the clock-out time is earlier than the clock-in time, the calculator adds 24 hours so the shift spans midnight.
Should breaks be subtracted?
Unpaid breaks are subtracted from paid time; paid breaks are not, so only enter unpaid break minutes.
