How Do I Find a Square Root?

Look for the number that multiplies by itself to give your value. The square root of 144 is 12 because 12 × 12 = 144. For values that aren't perfect squares, the result is a decimal — the square root of 2 is about 1.41421.

Perfect Squares and Cube Roots

Perfect squares like 1, 4, 9, 16, and 25 have whole-number square roots. The cube root reverses cubing — the cube root of 27 is 3 because 3 × 3 × 3 = 27. Square roots of negative numbers are not real numbers.
