Exponent Calculator Guide
Raise any number to any power. An exponent tells you how many times to multiply the base by itself, and this calculator handles positive, negative, and fractional exponents.
bⁿ means b multiplied by itself n times. A negative exponent means one divided by the power (b⁻ⁿ = 1/bⁿ), and a fractional exponent is a root (b^(1/2) = √b).
How Do I Calculate Exponents?
Multiply the base by itself as many times as the exponent says. For example, 2¹⁰ means multiplying 2 by itself ten times, which equals 1,024. A base of 9 to the power 0.5 is the square root of 9, or 3.
Negative and Zero Exponents
Any nonzero number to the power 0 equals 1. A negative exponent flips the base into a fraction: 2⁻² equals 1 divided by 2², or 0.25. Fractional exponents combine powers and roots.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is an exponent?
An exponent shows how many times to multiply a base number by itself; 2³ means 2 × 2 × 2 = 8.
What does a negative exponent mean?
It means one divided by the positive power — for example, 2⁻² equals 1/4, or 0.25.
What is anything to the power of zero?
Any nonzero number raised to the power 0 equals 1.
What is a fractional exponent?
A fractional exponent is a root — for instance, x^(1/2) is the square root of x.
