Boxes of laminate or vinyl plank from your room size — plus the last-row width, which is the thing that decides whether the finished floor looks right.
Boxes = ceiling of [area × (1 + waste) ÷ coverage per box]
A 12×15 room is 180 sq ft. With 7% waste and 20 sq ft boxes that's 10 boxes — you cannot buy 9.63.
Check the Last Row Before You Start
Lay full planks from one wall and whatever's left at the far side is your last row. If that works out to a sliver — under about 2 inches — the floor will look wrong and the sliver will be fragile and hard to click in.
The fix costs nothing but has to happen before the first plank goes down: rip the first row narrower so the first and last rows come out roughly equal. Everyone who's laid a floor has learned this the expensive way, on the last row.
Floating Floors Must Float
Laminate and vinyl plank expand and contract with temperature and humidity across the whole field of the floor.
That's why you leave an expansion gap — usually about ¼ to ⅜in — at every wall and every fixed object, and why you never fasten or glue the field down. Trapping a floating floor is how you get a floor that buckles into a ridge in July. The skirting covers the gap; it doesn't close it.
Acclimatise It, Actually
The boxes need to sit in the room they'll live in, unopened, usually for 48 hours or more. It's tedious and it feels like a formality invented by lawyers.
It isn't. Plank installed cold and then warmed will grow, and a floor with no room to grow lifts. This is the single most-ignored line in every installation manual and the single most common cause of a failed claim.
Underlayment Depends on What's Underneath
Some products have it pre-attached; adding a second layer under those is a real mistake, because too much cushion lets the joints flex and fail.
On concrete you almost always need a moisture barrier regardless of the pad, because concrete moves water vapour continuously even when it feels dry. Tape the seams properly or don't bother laying it.
Buy the Spare Box
Keep a full box after the job. Products get discontinued constantly, and when a plank gets damaged in three years you'll want an exact match rather than the nearest thing still in stock.
