Carpet Calculator Guide

Carpet isn't sold by the area of your room. It's cut off a roll of fixed width, and that single fact decides how much you actually pay for.

The Formula

Square yards = square feet ÷ 9
A 12×15 room is 180 sq ft = 20 sq yards.
But if the room is wider than the roll, you need two widths — and you pay for the offcut.

Roll Width Is Everything

Carpet typically comes on a 12ft roll. A 12ft-wide room is perfect — one width, no seam, almost no waste.

A 13ft-wide room is a different story. You need two widths, and the second contributes only a 1ft strip. You buy 26ft of width and use 13. That extra foot of room costs you an entire second run of carpet, which is why room dimensions matter far more than room area here.

Sq Yards vs Sq Feet — Check Which You're Being Quoted

A square yard is nine square feet, so $30 per square yard and $30 per square foot differ by 9×.

Carpet has traditionally been sold by the square yard and increasingly gets advertised by the square foot, because the number looks smaller. If a price seems remarkable, check the unit before you get excited.

Seams Are Permanent Decisions

If your room needs two widths, there'll be a seam. Where it goes matters: run it along the traffic path and it will show and wear; put it under furniture or perpendicular to the main sightline and it mostly disappears.

Pile direction has to match across the seam too, which is what forces the waste — you can't rotate the offcut 90° to save material, because the carpet will look like two different colours under the same light.

Padding Isn't Optional

It's tempting to skip or cheap out. Padding is what carpet wears against, and thin padding means the carpet backing grinds against the subfloor and fails years early.

It's the smaller line on the invoice and it's doing a large share of the work. Most carpet warranties are void without the specified padding underneath.

What This Doesn't Include

Stairs, which are priced per step and eat material fast. Removal and disposal of old carpet. Subfloor repair. Furniture moving. Any of those can be a real line on the quote.
