Blades Want to Sit 8–9ft Off the Floor
This is the number that actually matters and the one people ignore. A fan works by moving a column of air down onto you. Too close to the ceiling and it just churns air against the plaster; too low and it's a hazard.
On an 8ft ceiling you need a flush or hugger mount — there's no room for a downrod. On a 12ft ceiling you need roughly 30in of downrod, and without it the fan is a decorative object that does very little to the room below.
Airflow Beats Blade Count
Five blades don't move more air than three. Blade count is styling, and it has been for years — the numbers that matter are CFM (cubic feet per minute) and blade pitch.
A well-pitched three-blade fan with a good motor outperforms a flat-bladed five-blade fan comfortably. Look at the CFM rating on the box; a fan that doesn't publish one is telling you something.
A Fan Doesn't Cool a Room
It cools people. The wind chill on your skin makes you feel several degrees cooler, but the air temperature doesn't drop at all — the motor actually adds a trace of heat.
So running a fan in an empty room is pure waste. Turn it off when you leave. It's not air conditioning and it never was, which is also why it's cheap to run.
Reverse It in Winter — Gently
Hot air collects at the ceiling. Running the fan in reverse on its lowest speed pushes that warm layer down the walls without creating a draught you can feel.
The trick is the low speed. On high, reverse just makes a cold breeze and defeats the point. It's most worthwhile in rooms with high ceilings, where there's a real temperature gradient to fix.
Two Small Fans Beat One Huge One
Over about 400 sq ft, or in any long room, a single fan leaves dead zones — you feel it under the fan and nowhere else.
Two properly sized fans spaced along the room cover it far better than one oversized fan in the middle. This is especially true of open-plan spaces, where the room isn't really one room at all.
