VO₂ Max Calculator Guide

VO₂ max is the maximum oxygen your body can use per minute, per kilogram of body weight. It's the single best measure of aerobic fitness. A lab test is the gold standard; these field tests get reasonably close.

The Formulas

Cooper 12-minute test: VO₂ max = (distance in metres − 504.9) ÷ 44.73
Running 2,400 m in 12 minutes gives 42.4 ml/kg/min.

Resting heart rate method (Uth-Sørensen): VO₂ max = 15.3 × (max HR ÷ resting HR)

Which Test to Use

The Cooper test is more accurate but you have to actually run flat out for 12 minutes on a track. The heart rate method takes two numbers and no effort, and is correspondingly rougher — it works because fitter hearts pump more per beat and therefore beat less at rest.

Doing the Cooper Test Properly

Run on a flat track, not a treadmill and not a hilly route. Warm up first. Pace it so you finish nearly spent but don't blow up at minute six — the most common error is starting too fast and jogging the last third, which understates your result.

If you're not used to hard efforts, or you have any heart condition, talk to a doctor before doing a maximal test. This is genuinely all-out exercise.

Why the Number Is Per Kilogram

VO₂ max is expressed relative to body weight, which has a consequence people rarely like: losing weight raises your VO₂ max without you getting any fitter. Your engine didn't change; the load did. Elite endurance athletes are light for exactly this reason.

What's Trainable and What Isn't

Genetics set a large part of your ceiling — some people respond dramatically to training and some barely move, doing identical programmes. Typical improvement is 5–20% with consistent training, and most of it arrives in the first few months.

That's not a reason to skip training. VO₂ max is one of the strongest predictors of long-term health there is, and going from unfit to moderately fit matters far more for you than going from good to elite.
