Running Pace Calculator Guide

Whether you're training for a 5K or a marathon, knowing your pace helps you plan and race smarter. This calculator turns any distance and finish time into your pace per mile and per kilometre, your speed, and predicted times for common race distances.

The Formula

Pace = total time ÷ distance. Speed = distance ÷ time. Predicted race times assume you hold the same pace over the new distance.

How Do I Calculate Running Pace?

Divide your total time by the distance to get the time per mile or kilometre. For example, running 5 km in 25 minutes is a pace of 5:00 per km (about 8:03 per mile).

Common Race Distances

RaceDistance
5K5.0 km (3.11 mi)
10K10.0 km (6.21 mi)
Half marathon21.10 km (13.11 mi)
Marathon42.195 km (26.22 mi)

Worked Example

Running 5 km in 25:00: pace = 25 ÷ 5 = 5:00 per km (≈ 8:03 per mile), a speed of 12 km/h. At that pace a 10K would take about 50:00.

Tips

  • Race predictions are optimistic for longer distances — holding 5K pace over a marathon is very hard, so treat longer predictions as a ceiling.
  • Run even or negative splits — starting too fast is the most common racing mistake.
  • Train at varied paces, not just your goal pace, to build both speed and endurance.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I calculate running pace?
Divide your total running time by the distance — for example, 25 minutes over 5 km is a 5:00 per km pace.

What is a good running pace?
It varies widely by fitness and distance; many recreational runners average 9 to 12 minutes per mile, but "good" is relative to your own goals.

How do I convert pace per km to pace per mile?
Multiply your per-kilometre pace by 1.609 to get your per-mile pace.

Can I predict my race time from a shorter run?
Yes, roughly — this calculator projects times at a constant pace, though real race times slow somewhat over longer distances.
