Smoking Cost Calculator Guide

This works out what smoking costs per day, month, year and decade — and what the same money would have become invested.

The Formula

Daily cost = (cigarettes per day ÷ cigarettes per pack) × price per pack
20 a day at $12 for a pack of 20 is $12/day — $4,380 a year, $43,800 a decade.

The Number That Surprises People

Nobody notices $12. It's a coffee. It's nothing.

But $12 a day is $4,380 a year, and that's after tax — you have to earn perhaps $5,500 to spend it. Over twenty years, at a 7% return, the invested version passes $180,000. The daily amount is trivial and the compounded total is a house deposit, which is exactly why the habit is so easy to fund and so expensive to keep.

About the Investment Figure

It's the standard future value of a monthly contribution, compounded at the rate you pick. 7% is a common long-run assumption for a diversified stock portfolio before inflation, and it is an assumption, not a promise — real returns vary wildly and can be negative for years at a stretch.

It also assumes you'd actually invest the money rather than spend it on something else, which is the least reliable part of the model.

The Money Is the Small Part

Cost calculators are a nudge, not an argument. The real case against smoking is that it kills roughly half of long-term smokers, and the money is a rounding error next to that.

But money is concrete in a way that risk isn't. "One in two" is abstract; "$43,800 over the last decade" is a car. If the number is what gets you to a quit date, it's done its job.

Costs This Doesn't Count

Higher life and health insurance premiums. Lower resale value on a smoked-in car. Dental work. Lost income from sick days. And the substantial healthcare costs that arrive later, in the years when you're least able to earn.

If You're Thinking About Quitting

Combining medication with behavioural support works considerably better than willpower alone — quit lines, apps and your doctor all exist for this and are usually free. Most successful quitters needed several attempts, so a failed attempt is data, not a verdict.
