BMR Calculator Guide

Estimate your basal metabolic rate (BMR) — the number of calories your body burns at complete rest just to keep you alive, before any activity. It's the starting point for understanding your daily energy needs.

The Formula (Mifflin-St Jeor)

Men: 10×weight(kg) + 6.25×height(cm) − 5×age + 5. Women use the same formula ending in −161. It's the most widely used and accurate BMR equation.

What Is BMR?

BMR is the energy needed for basic functions like breathing, circulation, and cell repair while at rest. For example, a 30-year-old man weighing 80 kg at 180 cm has a BMR of about 1,780 calories per day.

BMR vs TDEE

BMR is only your resting energy. Your total daily energy expenditure (TDEE) adds the calories you burn through daily movement and exercise, and is found by multiplying BMR by an activity factor. TDEE is what you'd compare against calories eaten.

Please note

This is a general estimate for information only, not medical or nutritional advice. Individual needs vary with health, goals, and other factors — talk to a doctor or registered dietitian for guidance specific to you.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is BMR?
Basal metabolic rate is the calories your body burns at rest to maintain basic functions, before any activity.

How is BMR calculated?
This calculator uses the Mifflin-St Jeor equation, which is based on your weight, height, age, and sex.

What is the difference between BMR and TDEE?
BMR is resting energy only; TDEE adds the energy from daily activity and exercise for your full daily needs.

Why does age lower BMR?
Metabolism tends to slow with age as muscle mass declines, so the formula subtracts more for older ages.
