Meat Per Person Calculator Guide

Buying the right amount of meat for a party or BBQ is tricky — too little and people go hungry, too much and you waste money. This calculator estimates how much to buy based on your guests and how the meat is served.

How It Works

Plan about half a pound (8 oz) of cooked boneless meat per adult as a main dish with sides. Children count as roughly half a portion, and bone-in cuts need about 50% more by weight.

How Much Meat Per Person?

For a main course with sides, 8 ounces (half a pound) per adult is the standard. If meat is the star with few sides, plan closer to 12 ounces. For appetizers or sliders, 4 ounces is plenty. Bone-in cuts like ribs and wings weigh more, so buy extra.

Adjust for Your Crowd

Big eaters, teenagers, and all-day events push the numbers up; lighter appetites and lots of side dishes bring them down. When in doubt, round up a little — leftovers are easier to deal with than running out.

Bone-In vs Boneless

The portion sizes above are for the meat you actually eat. Bone-in cuts include weight you won't eat, so buy roughly 50% more by weight to end up with the same amount of edible meat. This calculator adjusts automatically when you pick bone-in.

Tip

Serving several meats? Add up the portions but trim each one a little, since guests will sample across the options rather than eat a full serving of each.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much meat per person for a BBQ?
Plan about half a pound (8 ounces) of boneless meat per adult as a main dish, or up to 12 ounces if meat is the main focus with few sides.

How much bone-in meat per person?
Buy roughly 50% more than boneless, so about three-quarters of a pound per adult, because the bone adds weight you won't eat.

How much meat for children?
Children typically eat about half an adult portion, so roughly 4 ounces each for a main dish.

Should I round up when buying meat?
Yes, rounding up slightly is safer than running short, and leftovers keep well or can be repurposed into other meals.
