How We Calculated

Turkey Cooking Time Calculator Guide

Undercook a turkey and it's unsafe; overcook it and it's dry. This calculator estimates roasting time from the bird's weight, whether it's stuffed, and your oven temperature — then reminds you to confirm doneness with a thermometer.

The Rule of Thumb

At 325°F, allow about 13 minutes per pound for an unstuffed turkey and 15 minutes per pound stuffed. The turkey is done when the thickest part of the thigh reaches 165°F.

How Long Do I Cook a Turkey?

Multiply the turkey's weight by the per-pound time for your setup. These are estimates — ovens and birds vary — so start checking the temperature about 45 minutes before the calculated finish, and cook to 165°F rather than by the clock alone.

Worked Example

A 14 lb unstuffed turkey at 325°F: 14 × 13 min ≈ 182 minutes ≈ 3 hours (3h 2m). Start checking the thigh temperature around the 2h 15m mark.

Tips

  • Cook to temperature, not time — 165°F in the thigh is the only reliable doneness test.
  • Tent with foil if the skin browns before the inside is done.
  • Rest 20–30 minutes before carving so juices redistribute.
