Cat Calorie Calculator Guide

Cats are small, so a few extra calories a day add up fast. This calculator estimates your cat's daily calorie needs from its weight and life stage, with an option to convert that into cups of food.

The Formula

RER = 70 × (weight in kg)0.75, then daily calories = RER × a life-stage factor (about 1.2 for a neutered adult cat).

How Many Calories Does My Cat Need?

Find the resting energy requirement from your cat's weight, then multiply by a factor for life stage and goal. A typical 10 lb neutered adult needs roughly 240–280 calories a day; weight-loss plans use a lower factor.

Life-Stage Factors (Cats)

Life Stage / GoalFactor (× RER)
Weight loss0.8
Adult, neutered1.2
Adult, intact1.4
Active1.6
Kitten (growing)2.5

Worked Example

A 10 lb (4.5 kg) neutered adult: RER = 70 × 4.50.75 ≈ 216 kcal; daily = 216 × 1.2 ≈ 260 kcal/day.

Tips

  • For weight loss, go slow — cats losing weight too fast risk serious liver problems; work with your vet.
  • Measure food rather than free-feeding to control calories.
  • Wet food is lower calorie by volume and helps with hydration.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many calories does my cat need per day?
Multiply 70 by the cat's weight in kilograms to the 0.75 power for the resting requirement, then by about 1.2 for a neutered adult — roughly 240 to 280 calories for a 10-pound cat.

How do I calculate cat calories for weight loss?
Use a factor of about 0.8 times the resting energy requirement, and reduce weight slowly under veterinary guidance.

What is RER for cats?
Resting energy requirement is the calories a cat needs at rest: 70 times its weight in kilograms to the 0.75 power.

Does activity level change a cat's calorie needs?
Yes — active cats use a higher factor, and growing kittens need more than twice an adult's resting calories.
