Wainscoting Calculator Guide

Panels, stiles and chair rail — with the panel width evened out across the wall, which is the whole difference between wainscoting that looks built and wainscoting that looks bought.

The Idea

You don't lay out panels at a fixed width and accept whatever's left. You pick a target width, work out how many fit, then divide the wall evenly by that count.
Every panel comes out identical. No runt at the end.

Even Panels Are the Entire Craft

Lay out 16in panels along a 46ft wall and the last one comes out at 9in. Your eye goes straight to it, every time, forever.

The fix is to treat 16in as a target rather than a rule: fit as many as divide evenly, then let each one be 15.4in or 16.8in. Nobody can see a 6% difference in panel width. Everybody can see one panel that's half the size of its neighbours.

Height Is Proportion, Not a Number

32–36in is the classic height and it works because it's roughly a third of an 8ft wall — near enough to the traditional one-third rule that it reads as correct.

On a 10ft or 12ft wall, that same 36in looks like a stripe near the floor. Scale it up: a third of the wall height is a much better starting point than a number you read somewhere. The rule is the proportion; the number was only ever a consequence of standard ceilings.

Board and Batten Is the Forgiving One

Battens applied over a flat backer or straight onto the drywall have no joinery to go wrong, and the layout is entirely yours — which is why it's the version most people should start with.

Raised panel is real joinery with real consequences if your wall isn't flat. Beadboard sheet is fast but the sheet seams have to land somewhere, and hiding them under a batten is exactly what the batten is for.

Plan Around the Obstacles First

Outlets, switches, vents and radiators don't move for your layout. Find them before you set your panel spacing, not after.

An outlet landing dead centre in a panel looks intentional. One landing half on a stile looks like a mistake, because it is. Also worth knowing: adding a backer board pushes your outlets back, and they may need extension rings to stay code-compliant.

Paint Before You Install

Prime and paint the pieces before they go on the wall, then caulk and touch up. Cutting in around a fitted grid of stiles and panels with a brush is genuinely miserable work and it shows in the result.
