Vinyl Fence Calculator Guide

Vinyl fence is sold as pre-made panels rather than loose boards, so estimating it is different from wood. This vinyl fence calculator works out panels, posts, caps, and concrete from your fence length.

How It Works

Panels = fence length ÷ panel width, rounded up. Posts = panels + 1. Every post takes a cap, and each gate adds two posts because gates hang between their own pair.

How Many Vinyl Panels Do I Need?

Divide your total fence length by the panel width. Most vinyl panels are 6 feet wide, so a 100-foot fence needs 17 panels and 18 posts. Panels can't be trimmed as freely as wood, so you almost always round up and cut one panel to fit the last gap.

Vinyl vs Wood

Vinyl costs more upfront but never needs staining or sealing and won't rot or warp. Wood is cheaper to buy and easier to cut to odd lengths, but needs maintenance every few years. Over a 20-year span the total costs often end up close, with vinyl ahead on labour and wood ahead on materials.

Posts and Gates

Vinyl posts are hollow and slot the panels in, so post placement has to be precise — unlike wood, you can't fudge the spacing after the posts are set. Each gate needs its own pair of posts, and gate posts are usually reinforced with a wood or steel insert because vinyl alone flexes under a swinging gate.

Please note

These are estimates for planning and budgeting. Always confirm quantities against your actual site measurements and check local building codes and permit requirements before you buy or build.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many vinyl fence panels do I need?
Divide your fence length by the panel width and round up. A 100-foot fence using 6-foot panels needs 17 panels and 18 posts.

Is vinyl fence cheaper than wood?
Vinyl costs more upfront but needs no staining or sealing, so over 20 years the total cost often lands close to wood once maintenance is counted.

How many posts does a vinyl fence need?
You need one more post than panels, plus two extra posts for each gate since gates hang between their own dedicated pair.

Can vinyl fence panels be cut?
Yes, panels can be cut down to fit a final gap, though they are far less forgiving than wood so measure carefully before setting posts.
