Paver Calculator Guide
This calculator gives you the paver count for any patio or walkway — including a waste allowance for cuts — plus the gravel base and bedding sand you need underneath, so you can order the whole job at once.
Pavers = patio area ÷ area of one paver, plus a waste allowance. A 12"×12" paver covers exactly 1 sq ft, so a 120 sq ft patio needs about 120 pavers plus ~10% for cuts.
How Many Pavers Do I Need?
Find the patio area (length × width), divide by the area of a single paver, then add 5–15% for cuts and breakage. Add a compacted 4-inch gravel base and a 1-inch sand bedding layer beneath the pavers for a patio that won't sink or shift.
Pavers per Square Foot by Size
| Paver Size | Pavers per sq ft |
|---|---|
| 6" × 6" | 4.0 |
| 6" × 9" | 2.67 |
| 12" × 12" | 1.0 |
| 12" × 24" | 0.5 |
| 4" × 8" (brick) | 4.5 |
Worked Example
A 12 ft × 10 ft patio = 120 sq ft. Using 12"×12" pavers (1 per sq ft) with 10% waste: 120 × 1.10 = 132 pavers. Underneath, a 4-inch gravel base plus 1-inch sand adds roughly 2.3 cubic yards of base material.
Tips
- Order full amount at once so all pavers come from the same production batch and match in color.
- Compact the base in layers — a solid, level base is what prevents future sinking.
- Diagonal or herringbone patterns create more cuts, so use the 15% waste option.

Frequently Asked Questions
How many pavers do I need?
Divide the patio area by the area of one paver, then add 5 to 15% for cuts — a 12-inch paver covers 1 square foot.
How many pavers for a 10x10 patio?
A 100-square-foot patio needs about 100 twelve-inch pavers plus 10% waste, so roughly 110 pavers.
How much base and sand go under pavers?
Use a compacted 4-inch gravel base topped with a 1-inch layer of bedding sand.
How much waste should I add for pavers?
Add 10% for a standard straight layout, or 15% for diagonal and herringbone patterns that require more cuts.
