Waist-to-Hip Ratio Calculator Guide

Calculate your waist-to-hip ratio (WHR), a simple measure of how fat is distributed around your body. It's one of several indicators researchers link to general health.

The Formula

WHR = waist measurement ÷ hip measurement. Use the same unit for both. Measure the waist at its narrowest and the hips at their widest.

How Do I Calculate Waist-to-Hip Ratio?

Divide your waist measurement by your hip measurement. For example, a 32-inch waist and 40-inch hips give a ratio of 0.80. Lower ratios indicate more weight around the hips rather than the waist.

General Reference Ranges

The World Health Organization uses broad categories: for men, below 0.90 is lower risk; for women, below 0.85 is lower risk, with higher ratios linked to greater health risk in population studies. These are general references, not a diagnosis, and don't account for individual factors.

CategoryMenWomen
Lower risk< 0.90< 0.80
Moderate0.90–0.990.80–0.84
Higher risk≥ 1.0≥ 0.85

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a healthy waist-to-hip ratio?
Broadly, below 0.90 for men and below 0.85 for women is considered lower risk, but this is a general reference only.

How do I measure my waist and hips?
Measure the waist at its narrowest point and the hips at their widest, keeping the tape level and snug but not tight.

Is waist-to-hip ratio better than BMI?
Neither is complete; WHR reflects fat distribution while BMI reflects overall weight for height. They give different information.

Does this diagnose health problems?
No — it's an informational reference. A healthcare professional can interpret it alongside other measures.
