Ideal Weight Calculator Guide

"Ideal weight" isn't a single number — it's a range. This calculator shows the range from several well-known formulas plus the range considered healthy by BMI for your height, so you get a realistic target band rather than one figure.

The Formulas

It uses the Devine, Robinson, Miller, and Hamwi formulas, which base ideal weight on height and sex, and also shows the healthy BMI range (18.5–24.9) for your height.

What Is My Ideal Weight?

These formulas start from a base weight at 5 feet tall and add a set amount per inch above that. Because they were built for different purposes, they give slightly different numbers — which is why a range is more honest than any single value.

Ideal Weight Formulas (per inch over 5 ft)

FormulaMenWomen
Devine50 kg + 2.3/in45.5 kg + 2.3/in
Robinson52 kg + 1.9/in49 kg + 1.7/in
Miller56.2 kg + 1.41/in53.1 kg + 1.36/in
Hamwi48 kg + 2.7/in45.5 kg + 2.2/in

Worked Example

A man 5 ft 9 in (9 inches over 5 ft): Devine = 50 + 2.3×9 ≈ 70.7 kg; the four formulas together give roughly 69–72 kg (152–159 lb), and the healthy BMI range for that height is about 57–76 kg.

Remember

These are population guides, not personal targets. A healthy weight for you depends on your build, muscle, age, and health — not a formula. Use this as a rough reference, not a goal to chase.

This is a general screening estimate for information only — not a diagnosis or medical advice. Individual health depends on many factors; talk to a healthcare professional for guidance specific to you.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is my ideal weight?
It's a range, not one number — for a 5 ft 9 in man, common formulas give roughly 69–72 kg, but a healthy weight depends on your individual build and health.

How is ideal weight calculated?
Formulas like Devine and Robinson use a base weight at 5 feet tall plus a set amount per inch of height, adjusted for sex.

Is ideal body weight accurate?
These formulas are rough population guides; the healthy BMI range and a professional assessment give a fuller picture.

Does ideal weight depend on age?
The classic formulas don't adjust for age, though body composition and healthy weight naturally shift over a lifetime.
