Roman Numeral Converter Guide
Convert numbers to Roman numerals and back. Enter a number from 1 to 3999 to get its Roman form, or type a Roman numeral to read it as a number.
I = 1 · V = 5 · X = 10 · L = 50 · C = 100 · D = 500 · M = 1000. Smaller values before larger ones are subtracted (IV = 4), and after are added (VI = 6).
How Do Roman Numerals Work?
Symbols are written from largest to smallest and added together, except when a smaller symbol comes before a larger one, which means subtraction. For example, 2024 is MMXXIV: MM (2000) + XX (20) + IV (4).
Examples
| Number | Roman |
|---|---|
| 4 | IV |
| 9 | IX |
| 40 | XL |
| 90 | XC |
| 2024 | MMXXIV |
| 1994 | MCMXCIV |
The standard system runs from 1 (I) to 3999 (MMMCMXCIX); there is no symbol for zero. Related: Average Calculator and Length Converter.
