The Seven Symbols

I = 1 · V = 5 · X = 10 · L = 50 · C = 100 · D = 500 · M = 1000. Smaller values before larger ones are subtracted (IV = 4), and after are added (VI = 6).

How Do Roman Numerals Work?

Symbols are written from largest to smallest and added together, except when a smaller symbol comes before a larger one, which means subtraction. For example, 2024 is MMXXIV: MM (2000) + XX (20) + IV (4).

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I write 2024 in Roman numerals?
It's MMXXIV — two M's for 2000, XX for 20, and IV for 4.

Why is 4 written as IV and not IIII?
The subtractive rule places a smaller symbol before a larger one, so IV means one less than five.

What is the largest standard Roman numeral?
Using standard rules, the largest is 3999, written MMMCMXCIX.

Is there a Roman numeral for zero?
No — the Roman system has no symbol for zero.
