How to Use the Brick Calculator

You do not need any construction experience. Here are the five steps:

  1. Enter your wall length and height in feet โ€” or switch to meters for metric projects.
  2. Select your brick size from the list, or type in custom dimensions.
  3. Choose a bond pattern. Running bond is the standard starting point for most walls.
  4. Set a waste factor. Use 5% for a straight wall with few cuts.
  5. Click Calculate. You get your brick count, mortar bags, and material cost in seconds.

Brick Calculator Formula โ€” How It Works

Here is the thing โ€” the math is simple once you see it clearly.

The Formula

Number of Bricks = Wall Area รท Brick Face Area (mortar joint included)

Adjusted Total = Brick Count ร— (1 + Waste %)

What each part means: Wall Area is your wall length ร— height in square feet. Brick Face Area is the space one brick fills on the wall face, mortar joint included. Waste % covers cuts, breakage, and fitting around openings.

The mortar joint matters more than most people expect. Without it, a US Modular brick covers about 17.2 sq in. Add a standard 3/8" joint and that becomes 21.0 sq in โ€” roughly 22% more coverage per brick. Always include the mortar joint when calculating, or your count will be too high.

Worked Example โ€” 10 ft ร— 8 ft Garden Wall (US Modular Bricks):
Step 1 โ€” Wall area: 10 ร— 8 = 80 sq ft.
Step 2 โ€” Brick count: 80 ร— 6.75 = 540 bricks.
Step 3 โ€” Add 5% waste: 540 ร— 1.05 = 567 bricks.
Step 4 โ€” Mortar: 567 ร— 0.02 = 11.3 cu ft โ‰ˆ 19 bags of 60-lb mortar.

Do not want to do the math? The calculator at the top does it for you.

Brick walls typically pair with interior finishing work โ€” use our Drywall Calculator to estimate sheet count for the inside surfaces. The framing behind those walls is handled by the Framing Calculator, which outputs stud count at any on-center spacing. For larger masonry projects involving slopes and erosion control, the Retaining Wall Calculator covers block count, backfill gravel, and cost.

Standard Brick Sizes โ€” Complete Reference Table

Your brick size changes everything. A larger brick means fewer bricks per square foot. All counts below include a standard 3/8" mortar joint. US Modular is the most common starting point โ€” used by brands like Glen-Gery, Boral, and Acme Brick.

One ordering tip: always buy from the same production batch. Brick color can vary between runs โ€” even from the same manufacturer. If you run short and reorder, the new bricks may not match exactly.

Brick Bond Patterns โ€” How They Affect Your Brick Count

Bond pattern affects both the look of your wall and how many bricks you need to order. Patterns that require cutting bricks at corners, edges, and pattern transitions create more waste. Here is the breakdown for all eight patterns:

Bond PatternExtra Bricks vs Running BondDifficultyBest Use
Running BondBaseline (5% waste)EasyAll structural walls
Stack Bond+3%EasyModern feature walls
Stretcher Bond+5%EasyVeneer, non-structural facing
Header Bond+8%EasyCurved walls
Flemish Bond+10%MediumTraditional double-wythe exterior
English Bond+10%MediumStrong double-wythe construction
Basket Weave+15%HardPatios, garden paths
Herringbone+20โ€“25%HardHigh-end patios, driveways

For structural walls, running bond is almost always the right choice โ€” strong, efficient, and the easiest to lay. For patios, herringbone looks exceptional but the 45ยฐ angle cuts add up fast. On a 300 sq ft herringbone patio, a 20% waste factor means ordering an extra 60 sq ft worth of material.

Mortar Estimation โ€” How Much Mortar Do You Need?

The good news is โ€” mortar math is simple once you have your brick count.

Mortar Formula

Mortar Volume = Number of Bricks ร— 0.02 cubic feet

For 1,000 bricks: about 20 cubic feet of mortar โ€” roughly 25 bags of 60-lb pre-mixed mortar, or 18 bags of 80-lb.

Bag SizeCoverage per BagBricks Covered (approx.)
60-lb bag~0.45 cu ft~22 bricks
80-lb bag~0.60 cu ft~30 bricks
94-lb (1 sack)~0.75 cu ft~37 bricks

Not all mortar is the same. Choosing the wrong type causes long-term problems. Use Type S for most exterior and structural walls โ€” Quikrete Type S and SAKRETE Type S are widely available. Use Type N for above-grade interior or non-structural walls. Use Type M below grade or where the wall contacts soil, like a retaining wall. For DIY mixing, a standard 1:4 ratio of Portland cement to building sand works for most garden walls.

Waste Factor Guide โ€” What Percentage to Add by Project Type

Every competitor says "add 5โ€“10% waste." None of them tell you when to use which number. Here is the actual breakdown. No other brick calculator page covers this:

Project TypeWaste %Why
Straight wall, few cuts5%Minimal breakage and fitting
Wall with corners or openings10%More cuts around windows and doors
Patio or paving โ€” straight pattern10%Edge cuts add up fast
Herringbone or diagonal paving15โ€“20%45ยฐ angle cuts โ€” high waste per brick
Complex arches or curved walls15โ€“20%Custom cuts on every single brick
Retaining wall or fireplace10%Mix of straight runs and fitted corners

Once you have your adjusted brick count, round up to the nearest full pallet. A standard US pallet holds 500โ€“525 modular bricks. A partial pallet order always costs more per brick โ€” and bricks delivered later may not match your original batch color.

Brick Cost Estimator โ€” Materials and Labor (2024โ€“2025)

Standard red bricks from suppliers like Pacific Clay or Acme Brick run $0.50โ€“$0.90 each. Premium or specialty bricks cost $1.50โ€“$3.00 each. Thin brick veneer runs $2.00โ€“$4.00. Labor for a contractor or bricklayer runs $5โ€“$12 per square foot depending on wall complexity and region.

ProjectSizeBricks NeededMaterial CostLabor EstimateTotal Range
Garden wall10ร—3 ft~213$110โ€“$195$150โ€“$360$260โ€“$555
Patio10ร—10 ft~743$370โ€“$670$500โ€“$1,200$870โ€“$1,870
House wall20ร—8 ft~1,134$570โ€“$1,020$800โ€“$1,920$1,370โ€“$2,940

A DIY homeowner can realistically lay a garden wall or patio. Structural walls, retaining walls, and anything above 6 feet should go to a licensed contractor. Always get a cost-per-1,000-bricks quote upfront โ€” rates vary a lot by region.

Wall Thickness โ€” Single vs Double Wythe

A single-wythe wall is one brick thick โ€” about 3-5/8" for standard modular brick. It works for veneer cladding, garden walls, and decorative features. A double-wythe wall is two bricks thick (about 7-1/4" to 9"), which can be load-bearing and offers better insulation. Double-wythe walls require roughly twice the bricks plus extra for header courses that tie the wythes together. A cavity wall uses two wythes with a 2"โ€“4" air gap, totaling about 10"โ€“13" thick. This is the standard for modern exterior walls because the cavity blocks moisture from reaching the interior wythe. Wall ties are required for cavity walls โ€” about 2.5 ties per square meter of wall face.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many bricks do I need for a wall?
Multiply your wall length by height to get square footage. Then multiply by 6.75 for US Modular bricks with a 3/8" mortar joint. Add 5% waste. For a 10 ft ร— 8 ft wall, that is about 567 bricks. The brick calculator at the top does this instantly.

How many bricks are in a square foot?
For US Modular bricks with a 3/8" mortar joint, you need 6.75 bricks per square foot. Larger bricks like the Utility size need only about 3.0 per square foot. Brick size and mortar joint thickness both change this number significantly.

How do I calculate mortar for bricklaying?
Multiply your brick count by 0.02 cubic feet to get mortar volume. For 1,000 bricks, that is about 25 bags of 60-lb pre-mixed mortar. Use Type S mortar for most exterior projects. Brands like Quikrete and SAKRETE are widely available.

What is a waste factor in brick calculation?
A waste factor accounts for bricks broken during cutting, handling, and fitting. Use 5% for straight walls, 10% for walls with openings or corners, and 15โ€“20% for herringbone or curved patterns. Always round your final total up to the nearest full pallet.

How many bricks do I need for a 10ร—10 patio?
A 10ร—10 ft patio covers 100 sq ft. Using standard 4" ร— 8" pavers in a running bond, you need about 450 bricks. Add 10% waste for edge cuts, bringing the total to about 495. Use engineering brick or a paver brick rated for freeze-thaw cycles for any outdoor paving.

How many bricks come on a pallet?
A standard US pallet holds 500โ€“525 modular bricks. Larger bricks like Queen or King size typically pack 250โ€“350 per pallet. Always confirm pallet quantity with your supplier before ordering โ€” it varies by manufacturer and brick size.

How much does it cost to build a brick wall?
A brick wall costs $8โ€“$18 per square foot for materials and labor combined in the USA. Standard red bricks run $0.50โ€“$0.90 each. Labor runs $5โ€“$12 per square foot depending on complexity. A 10ร—10 ft single-wythe wall costs roughly $800โ€“$1,800 installed, based on 2024โ€“2025 pricing.

How many bricks do I need for 100 square feet?
For 100 sq ft of single-wythe wall using US Modular bricks, you need about 675 bricks. Add 5% waste and order 710โ€“720 bricks. This gives you a safety buffer for cuts and breakage without over-ordering a full extra pallet.

How many courses of bricks make one foot?
Using US Modular bricks โ€” 2-1/4" height plus a 3/8" mortar joint equals 2-2/3" per course โ€” there are exactly 4.5 courses per foot. For UK Standard bricks (65mm + 10mm joint = 75mm per course), there are about 4 courses per foot.

Can I use a brick calculator for a retaining wall?
Yes โ€” enter the retaining wall's length and height as you would for any wall. Retaining walls over 3โ€“4 ft often require engineering approval and may need double-wythe or reinforced construction, which doubles your brick count. Use Type M mortar for any wall in contact with soil.
