The answer to "how many sheets of drywall do I need?" depends on three things: the total area to cover (walls + ceiling), the sheet size you're using, and your waste factor for cuts. Sheets Needed = (Total Area รท Sheet Area) ร— (1 + Waste Factor)

Always round up. A 4ร—8 sheet covers 32 sq ft; a 4ร—12 sheet covers 48 sq ft.

For a standard 12ร—12 bedroom with 8-foot ceilings: wall area = 4 walls ร— 24 ft average ร— 8 ft = 768 sq ft, minus 1 door (21 sq ft) and 2 windows (30 sq ft) = 717 sq ft. Drywall Thickness Guide

Standard residential walls and ceilings use ยฝ-inch drywall. Use โ…-inch (Type X) for garages, ceilings with 24" joist spacing, or where fire-rating is required by code. ยผ-inch is for overlaying existing walls or creating curves โ€” it's not structural.

How Much Joint Compound Do You Need?

Joint compound (mud) is applied in three coats: the taping coat, second coat, and finish coat. Each coat requires progressively less mud applied over a wider area. The combined total averages about 0.22 gallons per 100 square feet.

  • Taping coat: ~0.053 gallons per 100 sq ft (thin layer to embed tape)
  • Second coat: ~0.073 gallons per 100 sq ft (8โ€“10" feathered band)
  • Finish coat: ~0.098 gallons per 100 sq ft (12โ€“16" wide, very thin)
  • Total (all 3 coats): ~0.22 gallons per 100 sq ft
  • A 5-gallon bucket covers: approximately 2,000โ€“2,200 sq ft total

Buy all-purpose joint compound for the taping and second coats, and lightweight topping compound for the finish coat. Mixing compound in a 5-gallon bucket gives you better consistency than working from the bag.

Screws and Fasteners

For ยฝ-inch drywall into wood studs, use 1ยผ-inch coarse-thread screws. For โ…-inch drywall, use 1โ…-inch screws. Use fine-thread screws for metal studs. Space screws 12 inches apart on walls and 8 inches apart on ceilings โ€” closer spacing on ceilings prevents sagging. Budget approximately 1 pound of screws for every 5 sheets of 4ร—8 drywall.

Worked Example: 12ร—12 Bedroom

Room: 12' ร— 12' with 8' ceilings, 1 door, 1 window

Wall perimeter: 2 ร— (12 + 12) = 48 feet

Gross wall area: 48 ร— 8 = 384 sq ft

Subtract openings: 1 door (21 sq ft) + 1 window (15 sq ft) = โ€“36 sq ft

Net wall area: 384 โ€“ 36 = 348 sq ft

Ceiling area: 12 ร— 12 = 144 sq ft

Total area: 348 + 144 = 492 sq ft

With 10% waste: 492 ร— 1.10 = 541 sq ft

Professional Installation Tips

Hang ceiling sheets first โ€” walls support the edges and make alignment easier. On walls, hang sheets horizontally (the long edge running parallel to the floor). This orientation places the tapered factory edges mid-wall where they're easier to finish, and puts the cut edges at the floor where they'll be hidden by baseboard. Always stagger butt joints โ€” never align seams from adjacent sheets.

When screwing, drive the screw just deep enough to create a slight dimple without breaking the paper face. Over-driven screws that break the paper lose holding strength and leave a weak point. Use a drywall dimpler bit to get consistent screw depth every time.

Common Mistakes That Cost Money

โŒ Avoid These Drywall Errors

Rushing coats: Each mud coat needs 24 hours to dry before the next. Heat or fans help but don't shortcut this.

Too much compound at once: Thick coats crack and shrink. Multiple thin coats beat one thick one every time.

Skipping the primer: Paint won't seal compound properly. PVA drywall primer is required before painting.

Not marking studs: Mark stud positions clearly on the ceiling before sheeting walls โ€” you won't be able to see them otherwise.
