Effective board width = actual board width + gap spacing. Add 10โ€“20% for waste and cuts.

For a 12ร—16 foot deck using 2x6 boards (5.5" actual width) with a standard 3/16" gap: effective width = 5.6875". Boards across the 12-foot width = 12 ft รท (5.6875" รท 12) โ‰ˆ 25. Lumber is sold in nominal sizes but arrives at smaller actual dimensions. This is one of the most common sources of calculation errors. A "2x6" is actually 1.5 inches thick and 5.5 inches wide. Always use actual dimensions for board count calculations.

The Waste Factor โ€” How Much Extra to Buy

The waste factor accounts for end cuts, defects in natural lumber, and mistakes during installation. How much you need depends on pattern and material:

  • Perpendicular (standard): 5โ€“10% โ€” minimum cuts, straightforward layout
  • Diagonal 45ยฐ: 15โ€“20% โ€” every board cut at both ends at an angle
  • Herringbone or chevron: 20โ€“30% โ€” complex cuts throughout
  • Picture frame border: Add 5% on top of the field boards

Joist Spacing and Framing

Joists are the structural framework beneath your deck boards. Spacing affects deck rigidity and the minimum board thickness you can use. The most common residential spacing is 16 inches on-center, which works for all standard 5/4" and 2x6 decking. Composite manufacturers often require checking specs โ€” many require 16" O.C. for perpendicular installation and 12" O.C. for diagonal.

Diagonal Pattern Calculations

Diagonal installation at 45ยฐ is a popular design choice but requires meaningfully more material. When boards run at 45ยฐ, they travel a longer diagonal path across the deck โ€” mathematically, the length increases by a factor of โˆš2 (1.414). This means you'll use about 41% more linear feet of decking than a perpendicular layout of the same area.

Diagonal installation also creates more end cuts (every board is cut at both ends), which increases the waste factor from the standard 10% up to 15โ€“20%.
